Nostalgia Tour

Deichtor halls

We begin our nostalgia tour at the subway station "Steinstraße". Take a look at the "Deichtorhallen" (dyke gate halls), which are used as a museum these days. From a long way off you can already see the signal-like work of art directly in front of the museum.

Chile house

A small excursion into the "Kontorhaus" quarter of the 20's allows you to have a look at its attraction, the Chile house, also called the "flagship of stone".

Port border

We follow now the promenade along the port border. All the way up to the "Baumwall" you can see the old "Speicherstadt" (storehouse quarter) on the left bank of the channel. On the right side there are still some small streets, into which you can have a look and feel the atmosphere of the old merchants city.

On the right hand at the corner Brandstwiete/Ost-West street there is one of the few buildings of the baroque epoch in Hamburg that is still preserved. In the historical inn "Anno 1750" beer, brewn in the own brewery after a 200 years old recipe, is tapped.

We continue to go toward the the bridge with figures, the "Kornhausbrücke" (grain house bridge), which leads into the Speicherstadt on its left and to the Katharinen church on its right.

A little further on the right we come to at narrow lane, the Reimerstwiete, in which five reconstructed half-timbered store and residential houses from the years 1761 to 1824 (No. 17-21) are found.

Old pictures show a forest of masts from sailing vessels and small boats beside them, from which goods are unloaded at the dock of the "Zollkanal" (duty channel). Only the old crane and the little house of the crane attendant remind of the way of living in former times.

From here it is not far to the merchants' yard "Bei den Mühren 69" (rear side of Katharinentwiete) and to the streets "Cremon" (No. 36: view through the windowpanes into the old business rooms with low ceilings) and "Deichstraße" (dyke street), the last ensemble of old Hamburg merchants' houses, in which the businessmen lived and stored their goods under the roof. From the "Hohe Brücke" (high bridge) you have a magnificent view on the "Nikolaifleet" and the half-timbered rear sides of the houses. Not until the city of Hamburg had to give up ist exemption from duty in the entire city starting from 1882 and duty-free storage was only allowed in the newly created free port, the whole of dwelling, office and store under a single roof was given up. The goods were from then on stored in the Speicherstadt, were administered in the new office and business buildings, and the merchants built their new villas in the district of "Harvestehude".

Today in the Reimerstwiete, Cremon and Deichstraße there are several old town restaurants with lively atmosphere.

A little further we arrive at the subway station Baumwall where our tour ends. If you have still energy left you can walk another one or two stops futher along the port or do the complete port tour.
